Trumpism's most telling and defining instances – not its most significant, nor most brutal, nor most dangerous, nor most foolish, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. Over the span of several weeks, the US president commenced revealing everyone his intentions for an ornate dance hall twice the size of the White House and then began solo dismantling the eastern section to erect it.
He has committed acts countless times more severe – the existing assessment of fatalities from his cuts to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and recently an analysis forecast his energy policies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. However nothing as distinctive. No former leader would have dared – truly, no previous leader would have conceived – independently wrecking large sections of the executive mansion in order to erect a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of some of the nation's most affluent, almost all of whom conduct transactions with federal agencies.

As confusing as it is to witness the president seek to颠覆 the traditional concept about democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion within America who should not find it totally unfamiliar. This includes individuals like us – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have watched throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we were raised with into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of affection into a figure of animosity who approves exactly the harshness that he criticized in scripture; this transformation occurred more slowly, through multiple decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disturbing through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.
A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Christ that I grew up with, since in theory Jesus is the center within Christian belief, and given that the quickly increasing segment within America might have little sense about him as they consider themselves skeptics or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. I take no issue with these various perspectives, nor with different religions; yet I maintain that there are pearls of substantial value in the Christian story.
It is unquestionably not the narrative of a mighty king arising; rather, a child comes into the world to parents without shelter in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to a different country to escape secret police. The child matures in simple surroundings, a working carpenter; his message is about love for other people, especially for the disadvantaged – not merely emotional affection, but a concrete one, expressed by feeding and sheltering. The Savior's reaction to hostility is to turn the additional cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a method to instruct the attacker; his method regarding offenses is that if an individual takes your coat you must offer them your pullover too.
The apparent and clear fact that Christ from scripture advocates for a type of profound affection concentrated on the poor has consistently rendered Christianity somewhat of a controversial faith: engaging for the general public, but owing to its natural unconventionality needing to be controlled. In the fifties it was restrained through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so widespread that it basically blessed current circumstances.
A Struggle for the Highest Within Us
Hence I have become heartened to observe the determined opposition regarding Trump develop in this past year. It has provided significant comfort to help build the movement that has demonstrated publicly through repeated demonstrations, and appears to have motivated citizens to participate in numbers in interim political contests. We will need to maintain it, and in the same spirit, featuring US banners during all protests and requests to the highest qualities of American history.
We will be questioned ... how did you receive the stranger? Did you welcome them and embrace them or not?
America is best defended, to put it differently, by reference to the finest about American history, similar to Christianity is most protected through connection to elements that cause it to be special and wonderful, particularly the pattern of Christ. In all circumstances does it imply feigning the most damaging about the nation and Christian faith was nonexistent; it signifies both modesty and conviction, a blend that serious American Christians ought to accept.
